Gre vocab: Confusing Words


  1. Appropriate (v): to take something for one’s use, especially without permission or illegally
    Use: he was accused of appropriating club funds
  2. Redress (n): remedy; compensation
    Use: redress an injustice/ a grievance
          : redress the damage done
  3. Redoubtable (adj): formidable; deserving to be feared and respected
    Use: a redoubtable opponent/ fighter
  4. Shaving (n): very thin piece; esp. of wood
    Use: the floor of the carpenter’s shop was covered with food shaving
  5. Sleeper (n): something originally of little value or importance that in time becomes very valuable
                     : a film, play, book etc. that achieves sudden unexpected success after attracting very little notice at the beginning.
  6. Solvent (adj): able to pay all debts.
    Use: A solvent company
    Fun: Nepal is insolvent but Madhav Kumar Nepal (Former prime minister of Nepal) is solvent.
  7. Tempo (n): the speed or rhythm of a piece of music: in waltz tempo
    Use: your tempo is too slow
  8. Transport (n): strong emotions
    Use: in transports of joy/ delight/ grief.
  9. Veer (v): to change direction or course; esp. suddenly
    Use: the wind veered; the plane veered wildly
         : the car veered of the road.
  10. Wake (n): trail of ship or other object through water; path of something that has gone before
    Use: the fierce storm left a trail of destruction in its wake
